Therapeutic Massage is the moving of soft tissues of the body using techniques such as kneading, compression, friction, and stretching.
While therapeutic massage can be relaxing, the client and practitioner have shared goals of achievement and work together on a regular basis, over several sessions, to achieve those goals.
Benefits of Therapeutic Massage:
Some benefits include:
- Improved circulation
- Alleviating muscular tension and pain
- Improvement in cellular nutrition
- Relief from the effects of stress
- Reduction of anxiety
- Relief from sports injuries.
One of the major differences between relaxation massage and therapeutic massage is consistency.
In a therapeutic massage session, the client presents the practitioner with an area(s) of concern. The practitioner will then ask a series of questions such as how and when the issue occurred, what kind of pain it is, and any other questions that may be relevant to evaluate the client’s situation.
The practitioner will then propose a plan of action and perform that action. After the session is complete, the practitioner will reevaluate the client with questions and possibly ask the client about the range of motion.
This whole process may sound very involved and time-consuming, but it is usually done quite quickly. Therapeutic massage can be performed in a spa setting and while on vacation, however, it can be limiting without a consistent series of sessions.
