Deep Tissue Massage

Get deep into the fibers of your muscle for a true healing experience. This massage therapy is less about pain than it is about targeting areas of chronic pain and tension, using various methods to reach tensions and pressure points deep in your muscle.

Deep tissue massage is great for sports injury healing as well as releasing chronic tension in the neck, upper and lower back areas.

Deep Tissue Massage Benefits

Often deep tissue massage is thought to be the type of massage where more pressure is better, and pain is just part of the process.

This is not true and one of the biggest misconceptions of massage, especially deep tissue work. While a deeper, firmer pressure can be used during a deep tissue, it is about working with the tissues to getting deeper and not using force.

Deep tissue massage is considered more therapeutic and it is important to let your massage therapist know any areas of concern you have so the therapist can focus on those areas.

Once you are comfortable on the massage table, your therapist might do a series of different strokes to warm the tissues and gradually add a deeper pressure. He or she might use some other types of therapy such as apply a hot towel, craniosacral therapy, and myofascial release. While these therapies do not feel deep to the touch, they allow the therapist to get deeper into the tissues and allow the tissues to release quicker and easier.

Trigger Point Massage

Sometimes the therapist may need to perform trigger point therapy. This can be uncomfortable, but the results are well worth it!

A trigger point feels like a bead under the skin, a “knot”, that when pushed on, refers pain to elsewhere in the body. Your therapist will work on it by applying pressure for a few to several seconds and release.

They may repeat this several times until the trigger point releases. It is recommended that you focus on your breathing during this therapy.

If any therapy is too intense at any time, be sure to let your therapist know so they can adjust the pressure because pain does not always equal gain. When you are tensing in pain, it is counterproductive of the massage. The goal of this type of therapy is to release tissues and decrease pain.
